Women over 50 crushing it in triathlon has gotten a lot of attention lately, and honestly, it’s about time. As someone who trains alongside several women in this age group at my local tri club, I learned firsthand how driven and inspiring these athletes are. Today, I will share what the numbers actually show — and why this trend matters for the sport.
According to USA Triathlon’s annual report, participation among women over 50 jumped 34 percent in 2025. That makes it the fastest-growing demographic in the entire sport. Let that sink in for a second.
The organization registered 12,400 new female members aged 50-65 last year, up from 9,250 in 2024. Sprint distance events led the way in terms of growth, which makes total sense if you think about it.
Why the Growth
Race directors point to a few key factors. More beginner-friendly events with extended cutoff times have knocked down some of the intimidation barriers. Women-specific training programs and clinics have also popped up all over the country, giving newcomers a supportive entry point.
“We’re seeing a lot of former runners who can no longer handle high mileage,” said race director Maria Santos. “Triathlon offers variety and lower impact while still providing a competitive goal.”
That is what makes this trend endearing to us triathlon lifers — these women aren’t showing up to just finish. Many of them are genuinely competitive and bringing incredible discipline from their running backgrounds.
Community Focus
Local tri clubs report their women’s groups have doubled in many areas. I’ve seen it at my own club. The Tuesday morning swim group that used to be eight people is now pushing twenty, and the energy is completely different.
These communities provide training support and social connection, which research suggests is particularly valuable for this age group’s long-term participation. Probably should have led with this section, honestly, because community is really the engine behind the whole movement.
Looking Ahead
USA Triathlon plans to launch a national women’s initiative in 2026 aimed at first-time participants. The program will pair newcomers with experienced athlete mentors and offer subsidized race entries for qualifying participants.
Registration for the pilot program opens in February. If you know someone who’s been thinking about trying a triathlon, this might be the nudge they need.
